Enterprise value
The value of a business including its debt, as opposed to just its shares.
Enterprise value is the value of a business as a whole: equity value plus net debt. Equity value, sometimes called market capitalisation for a listed company, is the value of the shares alone.
Deal announcements mix the two freely, which makes headline prices hard to compare. A company bought for $10 billion in equity value while carrying $5 billion of debt cost the buyer $15 billion in enterprise value. Deal values recorded here state which basis applies, and where a filing gave a price per share but no aggregate, no total is recorded rather than one being calculated.
