Birds Eye (North America) is owned by Conagra Brands (the United States, NYSE: CAG), which acquired the brand on 26 October 2018 from Pinnacle Foods.[1][2] Before Conagra Brands, Birds Eye (North America) was owned by Pinnacle Foods from 2009 to 2018.[2]
Birds Eye is named after Clarence Birdseye, who watched Inuit fishermen freeze fish in Arctic air and worked out that fast freezing preserved cell structure where slow freezing destroyed it. The brand launched frozen food commercially in 1930. Conagra acquired the North American business with Pinnacle Foods in 2018; the European business of the same name is a separate company entirely, owned by Nomad Foods.
Conagra acquired Pinnacle Foods in a cash and stock deal, adding Birds Eye, Duncan Hines and Vlasic. Conagra sold its Wesson oil brand to satisfy competition concerns, and Pinnacle had been an acquisition target for several years before the deal closed.
