Roomba created the domestic robot vacuum category in 2002 and its name is used generically for the whole product class. The mapping data its machines collect about the inside of homes was a central concern in the review of Amazon's attempt to buy the company.
Amazon agreed to acquire iRobot for about $1.7 billion, later reduced to about $1.4 billion. British regulators cleared it unconditionally; European regulators signalled objections, and Amazon abandoned the deal in January 2024, paying a $94 million termination fee. iRobot stayed independent until a Chapter 11 plan made it a wholly owned subsidiary of Shenzhen PICEA Robotics in January 2026.
The Competition and Markets Authority cleared Amazon's proposed acquisition of iRobot unconditionally in June 2023, finding it would not substantially lessen competition in robot vacuums. European regulators took a different view, and Amazon abandoned the transaction in January 2024 rather than contest it, leaving iRobot independent.
